That Self Isolation Idea's Blog
Updated: 2 days ago
With everything going on in the world at the moment, it's a pretty scary time for us all. Our whole lives have been turned upside down. With a large number of us working from home to key workers on the front line working long and exhausting hours to protect every single one of us. We are distancing ourselves from loved ones, not knowing when life as we know it will return to normal.
As we are isolating indoors, we are wondering what we can fill our days doing. After all, there is only so much time you can spend working, watching daytime TV and chatting with the people in your home. We all need an escape of some sort.
We have put our heads together - (of course, not literally, we are isolated in different houses for a start!) and have come up with some ideas that we hope will help you out in times of need.
This is one of the most important things you can do whilst in isolation.
Have a Chinwag!
Check-in on your friends, family, loved ones or anyone you think may be suffering in this situation. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate, just a 'hey, I'm here if you want to talk' will be enough to lighten someone's day.
If you are struggling yourself, reach out! Make your voice heard. It's nothing to be ashamed of and everyone will do all they can to keep you company!
Fancy getting a little creative and competitive with your friends? Why not try and include some games? Start a group chat, facetime, call, get the conversation flowing. Simple things like a 3-day song or movie challenge, find out more about the people in your life!
Get the Blood Pumping!
Exercise, whether it's in the garden or doing a workout DVD, set aside some time daily to get your blood pumping. You could also take a walk around the block or go for a bike ride - But please stick to the Government guidelines! :)
Get fresh air
While the weather is nice, get out in the garden if you can. Soak up the sunshine, deadhead the flowers, just sit and take everything in. The fresh air will help clear your mind.
Reflect - Set time aside for you
It can be difficult being lockdown with the family/friends/whoever you share your home with. As much as we love them, we all need our space every now and then. Take a bubble bath, do a face mask, read a book, watch something you want to watch. It doesn't have to be for long, just enough time for you to feel relaxed and to enable you to be the best version of you you can be.
Learn a Language
Got a holiday planned for the end of the year? Or have a dream destination you have always wanted to go to? Why not use this time to learn a language. There are plenty of ways to learn online and some companies are offering reduced prices due to the circumstances so why not make the most of it.
Make it fun and learn quicker, if you know someone that would like to learn the same language as you then why not do it together. Start at the same time, set the same amount of time each day to learn and then chat with each other and practise what you have learnt! This is great for people that are isolating in different households as you can check in with people and learn a skill at the same time!
Learn to play the instrument you've had sitting in the corner of a room. This isn’t going to be for everyone but there are some people out there that have got an instrument somewhere in their house that they don’t even know how to play. This could have been something they purchased with the intention to learn, something you brought on a whim or something that has been gifted to you or passed down the family. While you have this time, why not put it to good use and make something out of it. You never know, this could be a key to your success later in life - just remember us when you are a famous musician ;)
Make a list of all the films you've wanted to watch, could be all the Disney films ever made, could be the classics you've never seen, it could even be your favourites that you just can't get enough of. Write them all down and use it as a checklist, see how many you can get through.
If that seems like a good idea but is missing a little something, why not create a little ranking system! Rate the films out of 10, 100, whatever takes your fancy!
Mix It Up
Update your playlist - bored of all the songs on your current Spotify/Apple Music Playlist? Give it a refresh, grow your playlist as you grow.
Create a new Playlist and share with your loved ones/friends/even us! Is there a particular song that reminds you of someone? Share it with them, let them know your thinking of them. Broaden their music taste.
Try Something New
Discover a new artist - us humans are creatures of habit, we know what we like and if anyone has a problem with it then tough. This comes down to everything we do in life and is also shown in our music taste. Many of us will stick to one or two genres of music and very very rarely will we venture out of that. Well, why not try and break the habit? Go online, search new genres, new artists, something you wouldn’t normally give a chance. You never know, you may find something you love.
Been meaning to update those old photo frames around the house? Dig out some old ones or place an order for some new prints. Help out small businesses for when this all blows over. You'll get your fresh frames and they will have peace of mind knowing people will be buying with them in this strange time!
If like me, you are a bit of a hoarder when it comes to keepsakes, you'll have a drawer/box/pile of old train tickets, concert tickets, pictures and anything with a special meaning to you, put to one side ready for the day you will finally do something with it. Well, today could be that day.
Grab a pen and paper, get your creativity flowing and work out what you want to with it. Scrapbook? Frames? A patchwork quilt of old t-shirts? Once you have decided what you want to do, put it into action.
For example, if you want to do a scrapbook with the keepsakes, sort them all into months. Do you have a theme for it? Look to see how you can incorporate that theme into the scrapbook, whether that is with themed backing paper, little stickers or drawings. The world is your oyster when it comes to creativity and something like this proves to be a great escape from day to day life.
